The Ravens NFL preseason record winning streak was extended to 24 consecutive games after beating the Eagles 20-19 on 8/12/23. Looking for number 25 against the Washington Commanders, the Ravens finally lost a preseason game.
A 49-yard field goal by Joey Slye with 10 seconds to play lifted Washington to a 29-28 victory on 8/21/23, ending Baltimore’s NFL-record preseason winning streak at 24 games. Which makes sense, as the Ravens beat Washington five times in that 24-game streak.
Who says preseason games don’t matter?
The Ravens record 24 game preseason winning streak bested the 19-game preseason win streak by the Packers, which spanned from 1959-1962. This stands as the second-longest in NFL history.
For even more context on how impressive 24 wins in a row is, the third longest NFL preseason win streak belongs to the Buffalo Bills, who won 10 consecutive preseason games from 2018 through the final preseason game ahead of the 2022 season, a 21-0 loss to the Panthers.
The Ravens set the preseason record in 2021, surpassing the 19-game streak of Vince Lombardi’s Packers from 1959 to 1962.
Does the Ravens preseason win streak matter?
All-world kicker and massage-aficionado Justin Tucker thinks it does.
“I’ve said this last year, and the year before and probably the year before that, but it of course means something to us,” Tucker said. “It’s a reflection of our organization, our coaching staff and our young players working their tails off this time of year to put a good product on the field, and a product that we can all be proud of. More than anything, it speaks to the way our coaches develop us and the way they ensure our young guys buy into what we do around here.”
There are only two Ravens players who were around for the entire unbeaten preseason run: kicker Justin Tucker and offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley.
The Ravens had 42 players score a touchdown during their NFL preseason dynasty run.
The last time Baltimore lost in the preseason was 2015, when rookie first-round pick Zay Flowers was a freshman in high school.
The most lightly regarded winning streak in the realm of professional sports finally stopped at 24.
The Baltimore Ravens managed to secure a narrow 20-19 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles on and had no idea that would be the final win in their unprecedented NFL-record preseason win streak of 24 games.
Prior to this loss, the Ravens were 70-33 in preseason games (.686 win percentage) since the franchise started in Baltimore in 1996. Harbaugh is 43-13 in his career in the preseason (.782).
During the 24-game preseason win streak, the Ravens outscored opponents 542-261 (+281 points) and 14 quarterbacks threw passes for Baltimore, including Josh Johnson (2016), Tyler Huntley (2021-2022) and Anthony Brown (2022) who each played in win 24.
“How did something like that take place? It’s pretty remarkable,” Harbaugh said. “What are the odds? There’s no one reason why it happened, but it says a lot about a lot of people. A lot of good practice, a lot of good meeting time, a lot of young players working hard to be as good as they can be, a lot of coaches developing those players, scouts.”
Josh Johnson was with the Ravens when the streak began, and he was the starting quarterback Monday night when it ended.
