On August 9th in Jacksonville, Jaguars kicker Cam Little made a 70-yard field goal during an NFL preseason game just before halftime.
The kick had so much leg, it would’ve been good from at least 72.
The second year kicker made a 66-yarder during the preseason last year. And made five field goals of 50+ yards during the 2024 NFL regular season.
In 2002, Ola Kimrin kicked a 65-yard field goal for the Broncos during a preseason game against the Seahawks. That was the longest preseason FG in history.
When asked for his thoughts on the record-setting kick (that isn’t a record at all thanks to the formality), Little answered justly.
“It does suck,” he said. “That means we just have to go out there and make it again. I was like, ‘Dude does that count,’ and he was like, ‘No, it doesn’t.’ That is unfortunate.”
“Don’t stress about the record. This won’t be the last 70 yarder,” Little added on X.
While noted massage enthusiast Justin Tucker owns the regular season NFL record of 66-yards, there have been some other notable attempts from distance.
The first one that comes to mind is Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski’s 76-yard attempt in Week 4 versus the Broncos in 2008. The longest field goal ever attempted during an NFL game.
For my money if anyone had a chance, it was SEA BASS. Then-Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin agreed.
I just remember how absurd setting up for the attempt even looked.

So that made me wonder – what are the longest field goal attempts in NFL history?
Here are the eight attempts of 70 yards or more:
Longest Missed Field Goal Attempts, NFL History
| Kicker | Team | Length | Result | Date | How Missed? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sebastian Janikowski | Oakland Raiders | 76 | SD 28, OAK 18 | 9/28/2008 | short | |
| Mark Moseley | Washington Redskins | 74 | NYG 14, WAS 6 | 11/25/1979 | short | fair-catch kick |
| Fred Steinfort | Denver Broncos | 73 | NE 23, DEN 14 | 9/29/1980 | short | fair-catch kick |
| Joe Danelo | New York Giants | 71 | NYG 20, LARM 14 | 10/28/1979 | short | |
| Phil Dawson | San Francisco 49ers | 71 | SF 35, STL 11 | 9/26/2013 | short, wide left | fair-catch kick |
| Mark Moseley | Washington Redskins | 70 | HOIL 29, WAS 27 | 9/2/1979 | short | last play of game |
| Brandon McManus | Denver Broncos | 70 | LV 32, DEN 31 | 1/3/2021 | blocked | |
| Brandon Aubrey | Dallas Cowboys | 70 | DAL 30, CAR 14 | 12/15/2024 | short, wide left |
When you look at the available video footage of the kicks listed above, it makes Little’s conversion even more mind-blowing.
Most of the attempts did not even make it to the goalline – Sea Bass included (though he was kicking into the wind).
If Cam Little can hit from 70, and in all likelihood 72 or 73, get that leg to Denver ASAP!
A 75-yard field goal attempt in the Mile High City may not be the stuff of LEGend. 🙂
